CAE Essay: Government programs to improve the health of population
Following
the discussion with a board of government representatives, it has become clear
that the number of lifestyle-induced diseases has increased among the
population in recent years. A question has been put forward about what the
government can do to keep its citizens healthy.
With the burgeoning
food industry and the growing speed of life, people often resort to the first
comfortable option, be that a wrong food choice or a physical inactivity. Educational
institutions fail to stress the importance of nutrition and exercise, and
marketing campaigns lure people into excessive self-indulgence with all the
ensuing consequences. Therefore, it is
pertinent that the government educate the population about healthy living. By
disseminating scientifically backed-up information on food and nutrition, authorities
can help the population make informed food choices. Moreover, by understanding
the importance of physical activity, people will be more eager to exercise.
As far as
the latter is concerned, the health benefits of regular exercise cannot be
overestimated. Another way the government could encourage the population to
improve their fitness is to open more gyms with affordable subscription fees.
Admittedly, this would increase the number of gym-goers. However, unless they are
confident about the advantages of physical training, many people are likely to continue
their sedentary lifestyle.
In
conclusion, although by opening gyms the government would increase the number
of fit people, by offering educational programs, it would cover a broader
spectrum of healthy living: improving physical education and eating habits. It
remains to hope that such programs will be so effective as to bring the number
of health issues to the minimum.
