Speaking Part 1
Sample
Answers
In
Cambridge tests: speaking and writing parts, you are asked to perform several
communicative functions. Below I have typed sample answers to speaking part 1
questions. The functional language is typed in bold.
H: stands
for a higher-level answer, whereas L: means lower lever.
Talking about likes and dislikes
Do you like
your job? Why?
H: Absolutely.
I work as an English tutor and I get satisfaction from helping others to
achieve their study goals. Also, my work entails lifelong learning and
self-development from my part, which I find particularly beneficial.
L: Yes. I
work as a shop assistant in a clothes shop and I really enjoy talking to people
and helping them to buy things.
What was
your favourite subject at school? What did you like most about it?
H: I
remember being keen on music. Our teacher was talented and gave us an insight
into the complexity of subtle tunes in the classical genre. This revelation was
an eye-opener for me.
L: When I
was a student, I was keen on history. First of all, I was always interested in
historical events and even dreamed to live in ancient times. Also, I liked our
teacher who was kind and helpful.
What do you
enjoy doing in your free time?
H: I’m
generally up to my eyeballs in my work. However, when an opportunity pops up, I
prefer to stroll along the promenade that is just a kilometer as the crow
flies.
L: In my spare
time I like to watch an interesting film with my close friend. We usually get
some snacks and fizzy drinks and make ourselves comfortable in front of the
monitor. I find this so enjoyable.
Have you
ever tried a new sport? Did you enjoy it?
H: I
remember dabbling in football on a couple of occasions. Whether it was the fear
of a ball hitting straight on my nose or my embarrassment at faulty attempts to
kick the ball to the goalpost, I can’t say for sure, but perhaps the
combination of the two put me off this game.
L: Once I
started playing football but I didn’t really get into it, so I gave it up a
month later. That’s because when I played with a lot of people I was always
afraid of getting injured.
What kind
of clothes do you like to wear?
H: Unpopular
though it may seem, I’m into wearing long dresses: those which accentuate
femininity and graciousness. On the other hand, jeans and sporty clothes are
not my cup of tea.
L: I’m fond
of wearing casual clothes. Jeans and T-shirts are the best options for me. I
think they are more comfortable than dresses and skirts.
Are you
fond of going to the cinema with friends?
H: Definitely!
I think catching a flick is a great reason to get together and loosen up after
a tedious working week. By the same token, I get the kick out of the ritual of
getting some pop corn and crunching it with my buddies.
L: Yes, I
enjoy spending my time with them in front of a big screen while a gripping
movie is on. I think meeting them at the cinema is a great way to relax.
