My first IELTS essay

Task

As there is increasing unemployment in the world, while at the same time those who have jobs are working harder and harder, it would be better to have 4 day working weeks for everyone, and so create more jobs. What is your opinion about this?

With the challenges of the modern economy, many people have to cope with heavier workload, while others struggle to find just any employment. In my opinion, a solution to introduce 4 day working weeks for all would be largely inefficient in addressing unemployment and would lower the standards of living.

Fewer working days for everyone would give jobs to some, but make redundant others.  Admittedly, the former staff would have more rest while new people were sharing their jobs. There would be greater equality in the financial status of the population, for this massive enrollment would come at the cost of reducing salaries for old employees to the benefit of the newly employed. From an economical perspective, this widespread lower income would reduce the demand for luxuries, such as 5-star hotels, cars, or holidays to exotic destinations, eliminating the need for many jobs in the wake. But there would be bigger issues.

The overall quality of goods and services would decrease. Arguably, the unemployed lack the skills and knowledge of their experienced colleagues. By helping newcomers to work in line with more competent workers,  employers would have to allocate substantial resources to train them, this being of questionable efficacy. Besides, it would be hard to synchronize tasks between co-workers. As a result, failures would be commonplace, compromising the quality of goods and services we normally use. The economical landscape would be nowhere near as varied as before.

To recapitulate, introducing 4 day working weeks would only partially serve its purpose by lifting the workload from the shoulders of full-time workers. With more jobs being given to the unemployed, not only would the rate of redundancy stay roughly the same, but also the economy would suffer. It only remains to be seen how the job market will equal the workload among the population without any harm in any field.
