CAE Essay: Cure for game addiction
Here's a CAE essay task taken fom Writing for Advanced with Answer Key by M. Mann and S. Taylore-Knowles, page 13
And below is my essay makeover.
Following
the discussion with a panel of researchers, it was apparent that an increasing
number of population are obsessed with computer games. This raises the question
of what can be done to treat game addiction.
Public
service announcements can help individuals raise awareness of game addiction
and recognize the first signs of addictive behaviour before it becomes a nagging obsession.
Some might argue that public notices are often ignored by people. However, it only
takes a sweeping glance at catchy, warning writings of notices for them to
effect behavioral changes at a subconscious level. And if this tactic is to
serve its purpose, public announcements should reach broader masses of people.
In some severe cases of game addiction, it is true that treatment programs can be
effective in helping individuals to regain self-control. But the problem is
that a substantial number of individuals feel either stigmatized to be enrolled such
programs, or feel skeptical about the positive outcome of therapies. And if there is
general reluctance to take treatment, hardly would more resources
for treatment programs be justified.
From the
above it follows that while therapies can sometimes cure game
addiction effectively, public announcements will help a wider audience, since they have the potential to curb the first signs of addiction before it becomes serious. It remains to hope that authorities can realise this potential and disseinate public announcements in an optimal volume.
