CPE Review: Chat GPT

An English language magazine called Technology Today is preparing a special edition on technological innovations of recent years such as new gadgets, applications for mobile phones and computer software. You decide to send in a review of something that you have found useful, briefly describing what it can do and analysing reasons why it has become so popular.

I have been teaching English for almost a decade and until recently, along with different other specialists, I used to create much of my content manually, which was both time consuming and cognitively demanding. Luckily, this has changed since the advent of Chat GPT.

Developed in 2022, Chat GPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that uses natural language processing to create humanlike conversational dialogue no matter the complexity of the language. In my case this has meant that I can have custom-made tasks created within split seconds, free of charge. Thanks to this innovation, I have been able to hasten my lesson planning, thus saving a large amount of time.  

On a broader scale, two major areas in which Chat GPT is used are marketing and the IT industry. This can be explained by their all-encompassing role in the modern world, and the practical application Chat GPT provides for them. Namely, marketers use this chatbot to generate metadata with recommended target keywords to create SEO texts for promoting their services. Program developers, in their turn, can automate repetitive tasks such as code completion, bug fixing, and even code generation.

Of course, Chat GPT is not without flaws. It has certain limitations in the world knowledge, meaning that the validity of some answers is to be questioned. Another major issue I, myself, have encountered is that it sometimes yields lengthy and unnaturally sounding texts that give way to their artificial origin.

Be that as it may, Chat GPT has considerably eased the workload of many professionals like me, making it a prime assistant to humans. With some further tweaking, it can produce near perfect output with astounding speed. Although quite a recent innovation, Chat GPT has gone viral due to its functionality, and it is even surmised that this chatbot may deem some jobs redundant in the future.
