LEARNING THROUGH MNEMONICS

Friends, I am taking a speed-learning course which has significantly transformed my perception of memorizing things. And I am so eager to share some of my insights with you. The point is that by using mnemonics you can really gauge your memory and learn faster and more effectively.

According to Google, 𝗺𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Employing imagery is a pivotal part in remembering words and concepts. Unfortunately, modern teaching methods fail to give this due importance. However, once you come to grips with this method, you will learn things faster and better.

Say, you want to learn some phrases, for example,

𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲 - to learn something in order to be able to repeat it from memory, rather than in order to understand it; ‘зубрить’ in Russian (www.dictionary.cambridge.org)

So, ‘rote’ sounds similar to ‘road.’ Now, imagine that you are running along a road to your exam. You haven’t prepared for the exam properly, so while running you are listening to the exam information through your headphones and trying to repeat word by word.

𝘀𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 - to dishonestly take money from an organization or other supply, and use it for a purpose for which it was not intended (www.dictionary.cambridge.org)

Siphon is a tube that is bent in the shape of n. In Russian ‘сифон’ usually refers to the tube that is attached to the bottom of your sink. Imagine you are board representative of a huge corporation. In your office there is a sink. Your son is sitting under the sink asking you for some money for an expensive car. You take your company money out of the safe and you push it through the hole of the sink. It goes through the siphon and into your son’s hands. Funny, isn’t it? In fact, the funnier, the more absurd, censored, morally unacceptable and morbid your imagery is, the better the information will stick.

Now, what if you have to remember a text with names, numbers and other data? Let’s look at this example from Goodge Random Fact Generator.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱?

𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗘𝗴𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻, 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟴𝟬𝟬𝘀, 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗴𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗿.

Imagine Egyptians in their well-known outfit cutting mellows and filling the sap in a pot filled with nuts and honey. Number eight associates with the sign of infinity. So, imagine people sitting an Infinity car next to the Eiffel tower. The Egyptians give them their sap-nut-honey mixture. One of the guys in the car opens the door, takes the pot and adds an egg to it.

What you should do is to link the new piece of information to your existing one thereby creating neurons in your brain, which are called ‘synapses.’ So, now I bet that you can easily reproduce the information above today, tomorrow, and in a week.
