The line graph illustrates cinema attendance by different age groups in Great Britain between 1984 and 2002. Overall, people aged 34 and below consistently accounted for the highest percentages of cinema-goers. By contrast, those aged 35 and over made up the smallest group, although their attendance levels increased steadily towards the end of the period. Among all age categories, the 15–24 group recorded the highest figures, standing at just over 15% in 1984. This percentage rose sharply to nearly 60% by the late 1990s. Although it then fell to around 50% in 2002, this cohort remained the dominant age group throughout the period. In 1984, cinema attendance among under-14s ranked second, at approximately 10%, while the figure for those aged 25–34 was considerably lower, at under 5%. Despite noticeable fluctuations over the period shown, by 2002 the attendance rates for these two groups had almost converged, reaching about 35% for 25–34-year-olds and slightly below 40% for child...

This time, I am sharing a report written by a colleague whom I am helping prepare for the CAE exam. The report is so well-written that I couldn’t resist publishing it. You can see some of my comments in blue. Your school wants to increase the percentage of its students studying art subjects to advanced level. The head teacher has asked you to write a report on attitudes towards the arts among the students. Your report should evaluate the appeal of art at the school, explain why comparatively few students want to become artists, and suggest ways of encouraging more of them to consider a future career in the arts. Write your report. Write your report. Art in schools and career Nowadays there is concern about a lack of interest in art as a school subject or future career. The aim of this report is to evaluate students` attitudes towards art and put forward ideas for improving the image of it. CPE Essay. Freedom of the press 1. Taking advantage of freedom The freedom of the press is one of our most precious social principles, but this freedom is given to reporters and editors to allow them to report on matters of general public interest and concern and not as a means of generating newsprint by harassing ordinary citizens and celebrities. The intrusion of the press into people’s private lives is not legitimised by the fact that there are readers who want a certain kind of tabloid story, nor can it be justified by the simple argument that “the public has the right to know.” The modern press should not be allowed to generate stories by taking outrageous photographs and certainly cannot be trusted to write its own rule of conduct. ---------------------- 2. How free is free? A great deal is said about free press and the freedom of speech. They are both cherished in our western value system. Yet just how free is the press? We may find out a lot of scandals about public figure...

Collaborative Living Co-housing is a concept of collaborative housing designed and run by residents who want their own private space but wish to operate as a community. This kind of living emphasises community care and welfare. It relies on a participatory process in which the residents design the community, built on a neighbourhood model: there are private houses or flats for families or individuals but also communal facilities such as lounges, meeting rooms and childcare areas. The organisation is non-hierarchical: different individuals run different activities but there is no overall leader. It is not a commune, however, and operates on a sound financial and legal basis. ---------------------- New Social Housing Social housing has finally started to challenge stereotypes and is seeking to restore a human scale and a sense of place to council owned properties. It is typified by contemporary design and energy efficiency within a high-quality environment. The change is social as ...

Write your answer in 240–280 words on the separate answer sheet. Childhood Dyslexia Dyslexia can affect much more than the child’s ability to read. There may be difficulties in problem solving, concentration or remembering pieces of information. If the children are allowed to work at their own pace and level, then results can be achieved. But if the condition is not picked up, it is not unusual for the dyslexic child to find that school is a particularly hostile environment, since the child is all too often labelled, by peers and teachers alike, as simply lazy or of low intelligence. It is vital that teachers be aware of dyslexia and provide a secure classroom environment. ---------------------- Adult Dyslexia If an adult is assessed as dyslexic, a report would then provide a full description of the individual’s strengths and weaknesses with recommendations for action, such as applying for support on courses or within the workplace. Experience suggests that the majority of dyslex...

Review of Where to Draw the Line by Anne Katherine In Where to Draw the Line , Anne Katherine explores different types of personal boundaries and how they can be violated. She uses relatable examples to raise awareness of how boundaries operate in everyday life. I’ve written down some of my key takeaways so you can get a sense of what to expect in the book and decide whether it’s worth reading. Communication Boundaries and Communication Gaps Imagine someone says something unpleasant or even humiliating to you. You feel insulted, but you don’t explicitly say so. A week later, that same person complains you haven’t called to check on them and even hints that mutual friends might gossip if you don’t meet. What’s happened here? A communication gap . Should you just brush it off and go back to normal? No. A healthier approach is to express what you found humiliating, explain how it made you feel, and make it clear that you need the other person to acknowledge their mistake...

Written on 30.07.2025 Report on the money raised and distributed by ‘Secure living’ Introduction The aim of this report is to present accountability for the ways in which the funds were collected by organization ‘Secure living’ and how they were further distributed. The findings are found on the data collected by me as member of the organization Ways in which the sums were collected Money was raised in two ways. First, our team sent emails to the public with a powerful message about social issues and a plea for contribution. Second, by our joined efforts we created video content, thereby actively promoting our cause on social media. But what particularly initiated contributions was the online platform that we created to track contributions in real time, displaying the initials of donors. This ensured transparency and enhanced confidence that the money allocated would land in the right hands. As a result, around 10.000 US dollars has been collected during the ...

Write an essay summarising and evaluating the key points from both texts. Use your own words as far as possible, and include your own ideas in your answers. Write your answer in 240–280 words on the separate answer sheet. 1. Divided by Comedy The Office quickly became a hit TV comedy in Britain when it appeared in 2001. Shot in documentary style, it showed the workings of a dull office in which the workers who had managed to stay sane were forced to endure the awkward and immature actions of their co-workers, particularly their socially-inept boss. The British loved the uncompromising humour but when the series was remade for American viewers, the boss became more likeable and competent, and the workplace more optimistic. This is further evidence of deep-rooted differences in the humour of the two countries. All too often comedy gets lost in translation. Universally Funny Germans with no sense of humour and Americans who do not understand irony are common s...

Write your answer in 240-280 words on the separate answer sheet. 1 A Pain in the Neck In the middle of the twentieth century, typists started to complain of pain in their necks, shoulders and arms, and since then Repetitive Strain Injury has become a widespread problem which costs the world economy billions of pounds a year . With workers sitting at desks for eight hours a day for years on end, often with poor posture and poorly designed workspaces, it is hardly surprising that so many people develop problems. More and more companies are now calling in ergonomic consultants. They find that by following their advice productivity increases and claims for injury or illness greatly diminish . Healthy Staff, Healthy Office Certain characteristics of the workplace have been asso...

Zoological Revolution The role of the zoo has undergone a dramatic shift. The growing recognition that zoos ought to be in the vanguard of the fight against the devastation of the natural world began in the 2000s with Jersey Zoo was set up to breed endangered species . As such, its concept is completely science-led, with researchers studying specific conditions needed to breed animals in small populations . Nonetheless, the impact of captive breeding programmes on the outlook for endangered species is probably minimal. Changing Zoos Zoos today are re-evaluating their purpose following growing awareness of the need for a greater role in conservation . This rethinking involves captive breeding of endangered species but, owing to the rapid disappearance of wild habitats , there is little hope for a ...

Some highlights of my 2024 reading challenge Noise by by Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, and Olivier Sibony This book explores the flaws in human judgment and strategies to minimize, if not entirely eliminate, them. The book reveals that errors in judgment occur far more often than we might expect, particularly in areas where precision is critical. Consider a judge who imposes penalties while being influenced by their mood or a criminal’s resemblance to someone they know. Or imagine a doctor making a diagnosis based on their personal characteristics or … the time of the day. These types of interference in decision-making are real, yet we rarely question the judgments of authority figures. One of the key solutions proposed in the book to reduce such errors—referred to as ‘noise’—is systematization. This means creating a standardized process: compiling data, assigning scores, and using formulas to automate decision-making. ‘Formulas and robots beat human judg...
